Writers Block

My friend Tom Humberstone just tweeted this quote:

“You know who gets writer’s block? Non-writers. They think it’s cool and romantic to struggle to make Art” – John August

In all my years of writing and teaching writing, that is the most succinct and coherent statement I have ever seen on the subject. A statement of absolute truth.

Tom has earned a big old link to his amazing comic work…

Check out his comic ‘Art School Scum’. My little pile of Humberstone comics makes me very happy.

  1. True. And thanks for the link to Vented Spleen. Very cool.

I like Hugh McLeod’s take on writer’s block: “Writer’s block is just a symptom of feeling like you have nothing to say, combined with the rather weird idea that you SHOULD feel the need to say something.”

I think a lot of people are discovering this version of writer’s block on Twitter. You can see the desperation and fear in every emoticon as they try to think of something from nothing. Not that I don’t do that too. 😉

  2. All forms of culture are currently being clogged up by idiots with nothing to say. Writers block really isn’t doing its job.
